Not your mother's pearls
Almost all pearls are cultured by planting a core into pearl oysters. Fresh water pearls are usually harvested after two to seven years. The corn flake shape is thin, but remarkably durable and more rare than other shapes. Early Chinese myths told of pearls falling from the sky when dragons fought. Ancient legend says that pearls were thought to be the tears of gods. The Greeks believed that wearing pearls would promote marital bliss and prevent new brides from crying.
